Hello, I’m Nate Loomis, this week’s “eyes and ears” at New Renaissance and your resource for all things enlightening, intentional, and uplifting.
“Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye.“
~ Helen Keller
I remember it well, the first time I was fitted for glasses to correct my vision.
I wore my glasses proudly as I had a love for Christopher Reeve’s version of Clark Kent. It was fascinating to watch Superman’s human and goofy attempts to blend into society, and I wanted to be like him.
I would dress up as Clark Kent and then pretend to turn into Superman (I wore the costume under my clothes) and in a flash, I would be the superhero in the backyard.
But I did not have Superman vision. In fact, I was suffering in school and particularly in math with undiagnosed double vision and astigmatism. My eye doctor, for some reason, did not believe my desire for having glasses. He thought it was just me wanting to be Clark Kent, as he told my parents.
They took me to another doctor after several years of this and the new doctor instantly discovered my problem – I am nearsighted in my right eye and farsighted in my left!
I see double without glasses and that is why 2+2=4 was not making sense to me.
Most of us start using some form of vision enhancement in our aging years, but what if there is a method to reverse this?
Intrigued by this question, I had the honor to interview Nathan Oxenfeld who will be presenting the Bates Method for reversing eye vision without need for glasses on Sunday, May 24th 1-4 Eyesight and Insight: Improve your Vision Naturally
Tell us about yourself Nathan. How did you discover your work?
I was prescribed my first pair of glasses in elementary school because I struggled to see the blackboard clearly. The more I wore lenses, the blurrier my vision became. I was not very happy with the way my vision was deteriorating at such a young age and even less happy when my eye doctors told me there was nothing I could do to stop the progression of myopia.
I came close to getting laser eye surgery, but luckily a friend of mine told me that he was improving his vision using something called the Bates Method.
Once I saw it really worked, I began working with a Bates Method teacher who helped me get my vision all the way back to normal. Seeing my vision go from blurry to clear in a short period of time motivated me to become a certified Bates Method teacher to help other people explore holistic alternatives to glasses, contacts, and surgeries.
I am now driving across the country teaching vision improvement workshops, raising awareness about the Bates Method, and promoting my new book, Give Up Your Glasses for Good: Holistic Eyecare for the 21st Century.
Could my own eyesight with double vision be corrected?
Yes, I predict it could. Misaligned eyes including strabismus (lazy eyes) are one of the main things the Bates Method helps. The relaxation and retraining helps loosen tight eye muscles and align them properly to achieve perfect fusion and teamwork between the two eyes. Beyond that, the Bates Method helps bring more clarity near and far. I used it to get rid of my astigmatism too.
What will you be talking about at this event?
The first part of the workshop will introduce what the Bates Method is, who Dr. Bates was, anatomy and physiology of the eyes, and how the Bates Method can lead to healthier eyes and clearer vision. The second part of the workshop will be learning and experiencing the basic relaxation practices of the Bates Method. We will also explore how other healing modalities like yoga and meditation can help accompany vision improvement.
Come learn how to take off your glasses like Superman and see!
